School Supplies 2012

Notebooks, paper, pens, pencils and calculators were amoung the many items which filled the backpacks donated by neighbors in our annual school supply drive. Care for Real distributed over 400 filled backpacks to area children on August 21 & 23. A special Thank You to everyone who donated supplies and the volunteers who helped to assemble and distribute the backpacks.

A big THANK YOU to the members of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service for the donation of canned goods collected during their food drive May 12.

Holiday Toy Distribution

On December 20, 2011 almost 600 children of Care for Real clients received holiday gifts, thanks to your generosity.

Parents were able to choose from an array of unwrapped gifts, ranging from dolls to gift cards, for their children. They also received age-appropriate books collected and wrapped by the cadets at Rickover Naval Academy and mittens, gloves and scarves donated by the Church of the Atonement.

Pet Pantry Featured on WLS TV

On Friday, Sept. 16, WLS TV featured the Care for Real Pet Pantry on the Evening News.

Care for Real began the Pet Pantry in February 2011 in response to a growing request from clients with assistance in feeding their pets. Under the leadership of Patti Colandrea of Bark Bark Club and Irene Bermudez of Care for Real, this program now feeds about 100 pets a month. To view the segment, click the play button on the video.

Volunteer Appreciation Day

On June 17, 2011, Care for Real had the opportunity to say "Thank You" to our volunteers.

Our volunteers make up the backbone of Care for Real by registering clients, stocking shelves, unloading trucks, answering telephones and much more. Without them we could not achieve our mission to help our neighbors in the community by providing food, clothing and referral services to those in need.

For many, it was an opportunity to view the new space before undergoing training procedues for the new open choice food distribution system.

Thank You

Hunger Walk 2011

On June 25, 2011, Care for Real joined approximately 7,000 people at Soldier Field in the 26th annual GCFD Hunger Walk. Clear skies and moderate temperatures were the perfect backdrop for the walk along the lakefront, from Soldier Field to 31st St. and back. Funds raised at this event will allow Care for Real to purchase food from the Greater Chicago Food Depository at reduced costs.

A special thank you goes out to the groups that walked from Bark Bark Club, Bloomingdales, Church of the Atonement, Edgewater Presbyterian Church, St. Ita's Church, CfR Volunteers and all others who contributed to this event.

Pet Pantry

For many people, especially seniors, a pet is a beloved member of the family and stretching the food budget to provide for an animal can sometimes be overwhelming. Care for Real and the Bark Bark Club are working together to provide dog and cat food for pet owners in need. Local pet shops and veterinarians are donating pet food for monthly distribution through Care for Real. If you need assistance feeding your dog or cat, or know someone who does, please view our Pet Pantry web page.

Pack the Car

Pack the Car is a grass roots effort developed by neighbors Steve Pryor and Gregg Rojewski to offer a more convenient way to donate food and clothing to Care for Real. One Saturday each month, Steve and Gregg park their car at the intersection of Clark and Berwyn. People can bring their donations to them, and they transport them to Care for Real.

Check out for information on upcoming dates and pictures of past events.

Christmas Gift Distribution

On December 14 and 16 2010, Care for Real distributed toys and clothing to the parents of over 500 children. For the last month, businesses, block clubs, churches, condominium buildings and others have been collecting new, unwrapped toys for distribution. Our caseworker speaks with every registered family the month before the distribution to determine eligibility, needs and ages of children. In addition to a toy or clothing, each child also received a hat, scarf and gloves. For many children this may be the only gift they receive this holiday.

Thank you for your suport of this annual event.

  Hunger Walk

On June 26, 2010 approximately 75 people joined Care for Real in the 25th Greater Chicago Food Depository's Hunger Walk. Armed with pledges from hundreds of sponsors, Care for Real joined 6000 other people at Soldier Field for a walk along the lakefront. The monies raised through the 5K walk allows Care for Real to purchase foods from GCFD at a reduced cost.
